 About Dawn Rose

Hi - my name is Dawn Rose.
I write and illustrate the picture book series, Stories that Count .
Making Numbers Part of the Story

Numbers are included in each picture book in this series, but story is always primary.

The desire to find out 'what happens next' is the engine propelling early learners through their first books and forms an important part of the whole process of learning to read. For young children, the delight of anticipating, guessing, or for return readers, knowing what comes next - is an important part of reading pleasure.

By integrating numbers into the heart of the stories, these books support early learners as they move forward and begin to recognise letters, count and calculate numbers as well as 'reading' and counting pictures.

Through the Stories that Count picture book series, I want to help young children to know their numbers in a natural way, and to understand how numbers fit into everyday language and experience.

This is not a new idea! In almost every culture, in every generation children chant, clap, skip and play their way into an automatic and visceral sense of what numbers mean.

Singing Ten Green Bottles didn't feel like maths to me when I was a young child. I didn't notice I was getting to grips with number order and number values while I sang and chanted and drummed with my siblings, friends and cousins - but this is what was happening.

Stories that Count, joins a host of wonderful books, songs, skipping games, animations, online learning and everyday activities in the world that help children navigate early maths. I hope my books can be added to those which successfully help children absorb useful ideas about numbers, in playful and creative ways! I've structured each book so that the story helps the reader understand the numbers; and the numbers help the reader find their way through the story. It is a circular reinforcement of meaning.

My biggest ambition with this series of children''s picture books is that children and their grown ups enjoy reading the stories - and that children hardly notice they're learning a little more about numbers, with every story!
